Service Description

Next Promoted date: Friday 13th March 2026 Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia. Pattern is applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, before coloured dyes are applied to the fabric. In more recent years this highly decorative and colourful process has been used to create designs and images on paper. Still Life is a popular theme for artists and designers, with lots of potential to explore colour, line, pattern and shape. Working from arrangements of flowers, ceramics, fruit and fabric, join Alison for a workshop in the Long Barn, to explore this vibrant batik process. We will begin the day creating a range of experimental samples and exploring composition, before moving on to creating final pieces. Be ready to loosen up and embrace the happy accident. The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. With over 30 years experience as a textile designer and book illustrator, Alison will guide you through a range of exciting approaches. This workshop is suitable for those with a range of skills and creative experiences, from complete beginners to those looking to improve their Batik skills. The workshop will be held in a beautiful, thatched barn on our working farm in the Meon Valley, in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Please bring along: an apron, a newspaper and an A3 folder to transport your work home, plus a few ideas to inspire you.
