Intaglio Printing

Intaglio printing is a classic and highly detailed printmaking technique that involves engraving or etching an image into a metal plate, usually copper or zinc.

Artists create lines, textures, and patterns by carving directly into the plate or using acid to etch the surface. Once the design is complete, the entire plate is covered with ink, which is then carefully wiped away from the surface, leaving ink only in the recessed grooves.

The plate and a dampened sheet of paper are run through a high-pressure printing press, forcing the paper into the ink-filled lines. This transfers a richly textured and highly detailed image onto the paper. Intaglio is valued for its ability to produce fine lines, deep shadows, and a wide range of tones, making it a favorite method for artists who want to explore subtle detail and expressive mark-making.

Techniques within intaglio include etching, engraving,

drypoint, mezzotint, and aquatint, each offering unique effects and textures.

Why do an Intaglio Printing Workshop?

An intaglio printing workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn a timeless, hands-on printmaking technique that combines craftsmanship with artistic expression. Unlike many print processes, intaglio allows for incredibly fine detail, rich textures, and deep tonal variations, giving your artwork a distinctive depth and complexity.

In the workshop, you’ll gain practical skills in carving, etching, and inking metal plates, while also discovering how to control the printing press to produce high-quality prints. This technique encourages patience and precision, but also invites experimentation with line, tone, and surface texture.

Beyond mastering technical skills, an intaglio workshop opens the door to a deeper understanding of printmaking traditions and personal artistic development. Whether you’re a beginner eager to explore new creative avenues or an experienced printmaker looking to refine your practice, the workshop provides expert guidance, hands-on experience, and a supportive environment to grow your confidence and creativity.

🌿 A Word From the Artist

“Intaglio printing has always fascinated me because of its rich textures and the depth of detail it allows. There’s a special kind of magic in working with metal plates—carving or etching your image by hand—and then seeing it come to life on paper through the press. The process requires patience and care, but it rewards you with prints that feel timeless and deeply expressive.

For me, intaglio is both a technical craft and an artistic journey. It’s about embracing the imperfections and surprises that come with hand-printing, and finding your own voice through the marks you create. I love sharing this process with others, helping them discover the joy and satisfaction of making prints that are truly their own.

Whether you’re new to printmaking or returning to it after some time, I hope this workshop inspires you to explore, experiment, and fall in love with intaglio all over again.”
