Upcoming Workshop

Beautiful Batik on Paper and Fabric

Batik is an ancient Indonesian technique where patterns are drawn with molten wax using fine brushes or tjantings—small copper tools that create fluid lines—before coloured dyes are applied. This traditional craft has evolved across cultures, each adding its own unique style.

At Blooming Designs, we bring this historic method to paper, creating original and richly textured artworks. Alison Butler, a seasoned textile designer, adapted batik for paper to produce decorative designs for the fashion industry.

In this Batik workshop, you’ll explore seed heads and summer flowers through experimental samples on paper and fabric, building skills before creating a larger final piece. You’ll also have the option to embellish your work with embroidery at home.

Led by Alison Butler, with over 30 years’ experience, the workshop takes place in a charming C18th Long Barn in the South Downs National Park.

Suitable for all skill levels, the workshop runs 10 am–4 pm, costs £99, and includes materials, tuition, equipment, and refreshments. Bring your lunch, apron, and creative ideas.

Batik on Paper
and Fabric

At Blooming Designs, we bring a fresh, modern twist to one of the world’s oldest textile traditions.  Our unique method, allows you to create beautiful colourful pieces on both paper and fabric using wax and dyes. We are one of the few studios in the UK to specialise in Batik on both paper and fabric—a unique blend of tradition, colour and pattern.

What Makes Our Batik Different?

Our process unlike conventional batik,  which is traditionally done on fabric alone, involves creating batik on paper as well which in some ways allows for more experimentation.  It is a highly addictive process and many of our students return to attend several of our workshops so they can develop their skill in this field.

Each piece—whether on cotton, silk, or paper, is individually hand-crafted using multiple layers of wax and dye. This careful build-up results in an intricate interplay of colors, textures, and forms, often reminiscent of stained glass or etched reliefs.

I attended Alison’s batik workshop in January and had the most amazing day. The workshop was extremely well organised, very friendly and catered for all levels of expertise from novice to those who wanted to increase their skill.

We were shown different techniques with time to practice them. Alison offered advice, encouragement and her expertise which enabled us to create our own piece of art. I would definitely recommend this course.
