Service Description

Who doesn’t love the work of Henri Matisse? His energetic use of colour, line and pattern, and his exploration of multiple creative genres, make him a giant among his contemporaries and those who followed. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Join us in the C18th Long Barn for Make Like Matisse, where we will explore his use of colour, line and pattern through a range of drawing, painting and collage approaches. We will work from observation, imagination and selected images by the C20th French artist, favouring bright colours, bold simplification and expressive mark-making. You will explore a variety of materials, scales and still life arrangements, building confidence in combining drawing, paint and collage. YOUR TUTORS The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. With over 30 years’ experience as a textile designer and book illustrator, Alison will guide you through a range of exciting creative approaches. She will be joined by Liz Wellby, a versatile and experienced artist, teacher and maker with a particular interest in sculpture and printmaking. Following completion of a Fine Arts degree at Loughborough University and postgraduate studies, she has spent over 30 years living and working in Derbyshire, now based on the edge of the Peak District. THE VENUE The workshop will be held in the C18th Long Barn on our working farm in the Meon Valley, an inspirational space in the South Downs National Park. WHO IS IT FOR? This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced artists alike, for anyone ready to channel their inner Matisse with a willingness to play, experiment and explore. WORKSHOP INFORMATION The workshop runs from 10:00am – 4:00pm and includes tuition, materials, equipment and refreshments throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch.
