Batik - Sunflowers and seedheads

Service Description

Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia, and its use has since spread to many other countries, each bringing a different cultural influence to the choice of images and outcomes. Traditionally, pattern is applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, copper vessels with a small spout that allows the wax to flow and create a fluid line. Coloured dyes are then applied to the fabric. As a successful textile designer, Alison Butler has also used this process on paper to create highly original and decorative textile designs for the fashion industry. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP In this batik workshop, we will be exploring the beautiful shapes of sunflowers and seed heads on both paper and fabric. You will begin by creating a range of smaller experimental samples and unique outcomes on different papers. This will allow you to explore the process and build confidence with the materials before developing a larger final piece. You will also have the opportunity to work on fabric, with pieces that can later be embellished with hand or machine embroidery at home. YOUR TUTOR The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. With over 30 years’ experience as a textile designer and illustrator, Alison will skilfully guide you through a range of creative approaches and techniques. THE VENUE The workshop will be held in a C18th Long Barn on our working farm in the Meon Valley, an inspirational building set within the beautiful South Downs National Park. WHO IS IT FOR? This workshop is suitable for a range of creative abilities, from complete beginners to those looking to develop and extend their batik skills.
