Inspiration from the Garden

Enquire Now

A Floral Still Life

Join Alison Butler in the Farmhouse studio or the Long Barn, to explore a mixed media approach to one of two themes: Inspiration from the garden or  A Floral Still Life.

Our inspiration will be taken from seasonal cuttings taken from the adjacent farm garden or alternatively you may wish to develop designs of your own choosing by bringing along images of flowers and foliage. We will also reference the work of Debbie George,  Elizabeth Blackadder and Mary Fedden.

This workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs.  With over 25 years experiences as a textile designer and book illustrator, she explored a range of floral images, playing with colour and shape in her lively and expressive designs.

During the day, Alison will guide you through a range of exciting mixed media approaches, including drawing and painting, where there will be few , if any , rules, including:

Mixed Media Processes

Stick and Ink
Using permanent ink on paper, this technique encourages spontaneity, and teaches you not to be too precious about your work.

Brush and Dyes
We will use this technique to experiment with producing very free and fluid floral images, encouraging you to work into the images to add more  depth and detail.

Wax Resist
This method will add texture and light to an experimental piece when used along with dyes and bleach.

Tissue and Bleach
We will experiment with a variety of different coloured tissue papers, adding bleach and ink  to create your image.

Having spent the morning experimenting with these processes we will use some of these techniques to produce our final piece of work.
