Beautiful Batiking on Paper
Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia. Pattern is applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, before coloured dyes are applied to the fabric. In more recent years this highly decorative and colourful process has been used to create designs and images on paper.
According to the Batik Guild, Batik is both an art and a craft. As a way of decorating, it is becoming much more popular in the West.
In essence there are a few simple steps. It starts with preparing your medium, whether that be silk, fabric or paper. Then moves swiftly on to outlining your design in wax using a tjanting tool and a wax pot.
Once the wax is in place, you can add your batik dye from which your pattern emerges. All that is left to do then is leave your batik masterpiece to dry and you have created something very special and quite unique.
